The rule states: Required ADD = Denominator of VA / Numerator of VA. This assumes the patient needs to read standard 1M print (newspaper-sized text) at the focal point of the lens.

For example, a patient with 20/100 best-corrected distance acuity would need an initial trial ADD of 100/20 = +5.00 D. The working distance at +5.00 D is 1/5 = 0.20 m = 20 cm, and the equivalent magnification at a 25 cm reference distance is 5.00/4 = 1.25x.
