Understanding Pantoscopic Tilt & Face-Form Wrap
Pantoscopic tilt is the forward inclination of a spectacle lens from the vertical plane, typically 8-12 degrees in well-fitted frames. Face-form wrap (or panoramic angle) is the curvature of the frame front around the face, common in sports eyewear (10-20 degrees).
Both tilt and wrap change the effective power of the lens because the optical axis no longer aligns with the patient’s line of sight. The compensated sphere formula is: F′ = F(1 + sin²θ/3) and the induced cylinder is: Cinduced = F·tan²θ. For high-powered lenses or large tilt angles, these effects become clinically significant.
